Spanish. Two separate but related documents; the first is a manuscript notarized document (Treviana, 1629) produced on behalf of Diego Lopez de Ocio, a familiar of the inquisition. It includes copies of various documents, including certificates of familiatura originally granted to both Diego Lopez de Ocio (1611) and his uncle Hernando Correa de Velasco (1571). The second is a printed certificate (Logroño 1617), filled out by hand, noting privileges for Diego Lopez de Ocio in his capacity of inquisitorial familiar. Cf. INQ100.

Spanish. Testimony of Valladolid inquisition secretary Martinez de Zuñiga, supporting Francisco Sanz Maldonado's candidacy for the office of inquisitorial calificador. Sanz Martinez was a Jesuit and catedratico of Salamanca.

Spanish and Italian. Letters from an Aragonese noble to cardinal Vicenzo Grimani (with copies in both Spanish and Italian, dated 1707) reporting on alleged archiepiscopal and inquisitorial anti-Hapsburg activities. Archbishop Antonio Ibáñez de la Riva's edict denouncing anti-Bourbon rebels follows; both documents have been copied into a larger cartulary in a contemporary hand, foliated 344-350 and 352. Cf. INQ21, INQ22, INQ24, INQ297, INQ583 and INQ584.

Spanish. Copy of a 1707 letter from an Aragonese noble to cardinal Vicenzo Grimani, reporting on alleged archiepiscopal and inquisitorial anti-Hapsburg activities. Spanish. Copy of a 1706 decree from the Zaragoza inquisition commanding clerical obedience to the new Bourbon king Philip V, recognized as legitimate by pope Clement XI. The document has been copied into a larger cartulary in a contemporary hand, foliated 351. Cf. INQ22, INQ23, INQ294, INQ297, INQ583 and INQ 584.

Gonzalez de Arbulu, Manuel; Juan de Albirtegui "Manuel Gonzalez del A... Lima; Madrid: 1711; 1765. Inquisition 25

Spanish. Two related documents; the first acknowledges receipt of documents, some dating as far back as 1705, from Madrid naming various persons (including Antonio Maldonado) to offices in the Peruvian tribunal (1711). The second is a notice from Madrid naming Francisco Matienzo to an inquisitorial post in Lima; his blood purity (limpieza) is mentioned (1765). Both documents contain signatures and wax seals.

Spanish. Letter describing in great detail the construction of stage & seating arrangements for royal events in Madrid. These were constructed in the same manner as used for inquisitorial autos de fe; Marcolario was in charge of arrangements for the auto of 1781.

Spanish and Latin. Two volumes bound together. Some mispagination in second work. Second work contains alphabetical index at end, followed on last page by manuscript addition (dated 1600) of more books to be expurgated.

Spanish. Collection of texts in multiple hands. The first document is a copy of a 1697 edict issued at Llerena, reproducing earlier edicts forbidding conflicts (verbal and in writing) among religious orders. The bulk of the collection consists of extensive notes from Llerena on various inquisition cases heard ca. 1608, 1648, 1655, 1657, etc.

Spanish. Prepared certificate filled in by a second hand, naming Miguel de Salamanca a familiar of the inquisition. Contains later family tree on verso, showing Salamanca's linear descendants through 1670s. Contains signature of inquisitor Doctor Gonzales. Cf. INQ97.

Spanish. Ornate certificate with hand-colored illustration at top, naming Hernando de Porto Carrera [Fernando de Puerto Carrero] a familiar of the inquisition. Contains signatures (Licenciado Paramo et al.) and wax seal. Document was certified the following day (on verso).

Spanish. Notice from inquisitor general Perez de Prado y Cuesta, confirming Pedro Martinez de Soria's tenure as Alguacil de la Santa Cruzada (a royal donation dating back to the 1630s). Certified in the following year at la Gineta, with wax seal (on verso); text partially cut off at bottom. Contains signature.

Spanish. Collection of printed and manuscript documents regarding Antonio Benito and his status in the inquisition's Santa Hermandad confraternity. The Hermandad's centuries-old role in the suppression of gypsies and bandits is noted, along with more recent struggles against the French invaders. Benito's qualities and blood purity (limpieza) are noted, for which he is named comisario quadrillero of the Hermandad. Contains signatures and wax seal.

Spanish. Fragment of a cartulary, contains copy of a 1779 document naming Joseph Romero Dias Cañete a familiar of the inquisition. Contains signature of Pablo Manuel de Simancas.

Spanish. Ornate certificate with hand-colored decorative border, naming Francisco Calero Alexandre de Pedraxas a familiar of the inquisition. Contains signatures; inquisitorial wax seal has detached. Badly faded in parts. Certified later in the same month (on verso).

Spanish. Certificate confirming the retirement of Luis Maldonado as secretary of the Valladolid inquisition with full pension and perquisites. Contains signatures, inquisitorial wax seal. Certified four months later (1717) before Antonio Llanes Campomanes (on verso).

Spanish. Ornate hand-colored & decorated certificate naming Joseph Gomez Olias Alguacil mayor for the inquisition at Morejón. Contains signatures and wax seal. Certified shortly after (on verso).

Spanish. Summary of 1594 trial, with secret evidence of numbered witnesses. Ana was condemned to death for Judaizing practices, with sentence commuted after reconciliation at a 1596 Auto de fe to confiscation of goods and perpetual prison. The document notes she was a good prisoner and recommends further commutation; a marginal note declares she was released in 1600. A later transcription of the document is included.

Josef Nuenta Escalante, Jose Manuel Calderon et al Diligencias contra el Reo A... Santiago Compandaro [Cupandaro], Valladolid: 1798-1799. Inquisition 125

Spanish. Inquisitorial trial of Atanasio de la Cruz, Indian of Copándaro, near San Luis de Potosí (Mexico), for having made a pact with the devil. The trial began in Copándaro (1798), but was later moved to the episcopal seat of Valladolid [Mexico]. Multiple documents in multiple hands, with signatures of several inquisition officials. De la Cruz was absolved and released in July 1799.

Spanish. Denunciation of Fr. Josef, with testimony of colleagues concerning various improprieties at mass, as well as illicit use of chocolate, women and pornographic images. Single document with signatures Ramón Pérez and Isidorio Carranza as well as notary Francisco Uraga.

Spanish. Collection of documents relating to the Santa Hermandad confraternity. The first three are printed forms filled in by hand on behalf of two confraternity comisarios; these contain signatures and wax seals. A series of manuscript documents follows, relating to the same Familiars and officials. Ornate binding with crest.

Spanish and Latin. Collection of 4 separate but related documents with texts for promulgation of an Edict of faith (Cádiz 1776) and pronouncement of anathema (both printed), and different types of abjuration and absolution formulas in cases of heresy (manuscript). Contains signatures and wax seals.

Real Decreto y Proclama de ... Cádiz; Madrid; [Arganda del Rey]: [1813]. Inquisition 410

Spanish. Collection of documents relating to the abolition of the inquisition, apparently dating to 1813 and purchased by a priest of Arganda named José Garcia Armesto. Included are 5 printed proclamations (some with signatures) from the regency Cortes on reform of religious life in Spain, including abolition of the inquisition while retaining punishments for heresy. Manuscript copies of instructions follow, with various signatures, explaining how measures are to be implemented in local parishes.

Spanish. Registered copy (paginated 153) of a letter to the Lima inquisition from the Suprema, urging establishment of a tribunal in Buenos Aires. Receipt acknowledged in Los Reyes [Lima] 31 May 1637, six months after it was sent.
